Fr Tensin’s first visit to our school!

Today we were visited by our new parish priest, Rev Tensin Perera CC. He lead in prayer as we remembered the faithful departed. He also told us about his home country, Sri Lanka, which is an island in Asia. They have a population of more than 20 million. Sri Lanka was once called Ceylon before the country achieved official independence in 1961.

Welcome to our Active School Flag website.

  • The Active School was launched by the Department of Education in May 2009 and is organised through Mayo education Centre.
  • The purpose of the initiative is to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.
  • It is the overall aim of Threen N.S to provide a wide and varied physical health programme for children both during allocated P.E. times and extracurricular activities.
  • We want to raise awareness about the importance of enjoyment, play and keeping fit and the Active Flag initiative will encourage us to do this.

Maebh, Ciaran, Cian, James, Elisha, Killian, Megan and Zoe.

Representatives from Senior Infants to 6th class have been selected to form an ‘Active Schools Committee’ and these pupils work co-operatively with school Staff and parents.

They meet and discuss activity-based topics within the school and community.

  • Below you will find our timetable of activities for Term 1. We are also working with Super Troopers and the children have active homework each night that can be done with their parents.

Monday: Brain breaks and soccer training

Tuesday: D.E.A.D (Drop Everything And Dance)

Wednesday: Run a mile

Thursday: Skipping (Leading to a skipathon in December)

Friday: No Football Friday – Playground Games

Discovery Science – Step 1 – Snake Spiral

To complete this activity, the children cut out the spiral and decorated it to look like a snake. The children then cut along the spiral and attached a piece of thread to the snake’s head. They hung the snakes over a hot radiator. The snake spun as the warm air rose.

The children learned that warm air is lighter than cold air. Warm air rises and cold air comes in to take its place. This causes air currents – both indoor and outdoor. These are called convection currents.

Science Week 2016 Step 1: Energy and Forces – Magnetism and Electricity

Making rainbow spinners!

Objectives: Investigate the Splitting and Mixing of Light

Skills: Experimenting, Observing

Through investigation the child were enabled to investigate the splitting and mixing of light. The children learned that not only can white light be broken up into the rainbow colours, but also that the rainbow colours can be brought together to produce white light. They also learn about persistence of vision (i.e. that if things move fast enough the eye cannot distinguish between them and they merge).

Can you see what I see?
