Tidy Schools Competition -Biodiversity Award Winner

We were thrilled to be selected as the winner of the “Biodiversity Award”, in the Environmental Awards Ceremony for the Tidy Schools Competition 2019, which took place in The Arts Centre in Roscommon, on 5th November. The prize is a great recognition  for the hard work and dedication we have put into our school garden throughout the year. Two of our senior students accepted the award on behalf of the school. Well done to all our staff, students and parents who helped out in the garden during school and in the summer holidays.

Grease -The Musical

Thanks to Castlerea Community School who invited our 3rd -6th class to see their production of Grease. It was a fantastic performance and all our students loved it.

Halloween 2019

Everyone made a wonderful effort to dress up this Halloween. Well done and thanks to all the parents who helped out preparing the costumes. Enjoy the midterm break.

Maths week

Children completed a maths trail outside and were using their “maths eyes” to look at our school grounds and problem solve. They were measuring, estimating, counting, drawing, searching, adding, subtracting and timing. Even the parents had maths homework this week – they all completed a ‘Maths About Me’ task.

Dogs Trust

We had a lovely visit from Aoife from Dogs Trust today. She spoke to us about dog vaccinations, micro-chipping, grooming and bringing the dog for regular health check-ups. She explained  about feeding dogs with correct dog food. She also reminded us about walking the dogs and training them. She told us an interesting fact, that a dog’s nose is 5000 times better than a human nose making them really good at detecting things at the scene of a crime, or to navigate if they are a guide dog. She demonstrated how to act if we are afraid around a dog and we participated in some role play situations on how to approach and rub a dog that we don’t know. We learned a lot!

Dreams

We marked World Dream Day by constructing dream catchers in Art. Our hopes and dreams for the future have a wealth of potential. We can transform the world by using our dreams in a positive way. We want to focus on our dreams and try to turn them in reality.

RSA

In the Junior room we have been learning about the importance of road safety. We have been learning that good road safety habits at an early age is vitally important. Each child was given a high visibility vest by the RSA.

The Five Senses

We have been learning about our five senses. We discussed which body part is associated with each sense and labelled the parts. We walked around the school to find out what we could see, hear, touch, taste and smell. We looked at the sense of taste in great detail. We got into groups and carried out a simple taste experiment. We tasted foods that were bitter, sweet, salty and sour. We all really enjoyed tasting the food that was sweet!

From Poly-tunnel to Plate- Our Homemade Pasta Sauce

We decided to harvest some of our Autumn produce and use our tomatoes, onions and herbs to create a home-made pasta sauce. Students from the senior room picked the tomatoes and onions, washed, chopped and cooked the ingredients, to create a lovely tasty and healthy pasta sauce for the class to taste and enjoy. Everyone from the class was involved in the meal preparation and serving. We created a delicious recipe using our home-grown produce.
