Day 4-Sports Day

We decided to have an Annual Sports Day on day 4 of the Active Week.

In the morning we started with Drop and Do 10. Here we increased the exercises from Monday by 5 more.

For the Sports Day the highlight was taking penalties against the staff. All staff members could now become very competitive goal keepers!!.

Other activities included, the egg and potato race, races, relay, wheelbarrow races, a skipathon and we climbed 16 mountains based on the activity-How many mountains can you climb. (counting the skips for each child)

Day 3.

We met at 9.10am at the top of the road to all walk to school together for our Walk On Wednesdays. Again we wore our High Vis jackets.

Once we got to school we continued our Run a Mile with a Smile as we have been doing since October. We have our Annual 5k road race on June 11th. This running each week is really helping us to get ready for the day.

We were super lucky to have Ciara from our local gym Pulse Fitness come to do mini circuits with us. We completed the plank, shuttle runs, jumping jacks, balance positions and squat holds. Ciara has asked us all to keep practicing the above. She also spoke to us about healthy eating and the amount of sugar in foods that we eat.

Playground games-Duck Duck Goose for the Junior Room and Rounders for the Senior Class.

At 2pm we all followed Mary out to the garden with Wayne to help out with planting vegetables and flowers.

Day 2.

Each day the classes wore their sports clothes. Having no uniforms for the week was great fun!!. We started Tuesday morning with DANCE- The Junior room did the Cha Cha Slide and the Senior Room completed The Haka.

We were delighted to welcome Sinead and Antoinette from the Ladies Tug of War team. A new sport for everyone to try out, staff and students. They had recently won Gold for Ireland at the indoor UK and Irish Championship in Castlebar. They were able to show this on Utube.

The playground games was hockey and active lines.

Active School Week- Day 1

Our Active school Week took place last week (April 24th-28th 2017). We had a great week filled with fun activities and even some sports we had not tried out before.

We started off Monday morning with Drop and Do 10. This included jumping jacks, lunges, burpees, squat jumps, crunches etc.

Following this we were had a visit from Gary Patterson, our county player and a club player for Michael Glaveys. He told the class some very interesting points about his diet and lifestyle when playing at this level. He took the children out to show them some important skills.

At 1pm we all took out our High Vis jackets and met the parents at the front gate. We all took off to walk to the local forest.

The playground games included- dodgeball/bulldog. Active Homework was continued this week with our Super Trooper journals.

Suggestions for Active Schools Week 2017

The Active Committee met to count the votes for the sports that the children had put into the suggestion box.

Most of the sports listed have been included on the Active Week Timetable.

The members also completed a questionnaire ‘What Club are you in?’ with the whole school to see if there were clubs we could include for that week.

Parents are asked to join us on Monday 24th April for our local forest walk at 1pm and Wednesday 26th for our W.O.W day at 9.10am.

All children are encouraged to walk or cycle to school for this week.

Sports clothes and runners must be worn each day.

The timetable will be posted soon.
